OUR STORY

All great things come from humble beginnings, our story is no different.  My name is Derrick Jenkins, and it was the summer of 2016 and I had just lost my job as a corrections officer of 3 years. The feeling of losing it all at once was terrible. I mean I had great benefits, 401k, healthy salary, all of it gone. But what felt bad in that moment, was actually a blessing in disguise. I had already known that it wasn't something that I wanted to do the rest of my life. The thought had crossed my mind to leave plenty of times, however, it took an unfortunate incident to force me to resign from corrections. That push out the door was all I needed to unleash the entrepreneur inside of me.  

That summer I started personal training and bootcamps. The hustle was real!  All my life my dream was to be a business owner. I had everything in place and the money was starting to flow in, but one thing was missing I needed a name, one that had a positive meaning, was bold, and would represent the hustle. Months went by and I came across a podcast by Eric Thomas. In his message, he talked about having a why and how we should have motives for what we do in life. When I heard that, instantly, the word MOTIVE stuck with me. I’m all about motivating others and pushing them to be the best version of themselves. I wanted to make it unique and original so decided to drop the E and add a V at the end, Motivv!

I made the decision early on that the brand would be faith based. I wanted to preach God along the journey, because he is truly the reason why I am here today. So I started to research scriptures on motives. I came across the scripture “A bad motive can’t achieve a good end.” Proverbs 17:20 MSG. As soon as I read that, I knew that’s what I wanted. My Motivv is buying my parents a house and allowing them to retire, so they won’t have to work another day.

I want to make sure my wife Ashlie and our daughter Avah are well taken care of. Ever since I was a kid, I always said one day I’m going to be real successful to make sure my parents won’t have to worry about anything. My dad is blind, he was shot in the eye years ago, and it caused him to be fully blind. It was hard on my mom to raise my siblings and me. Seeing her leave to work every morning at 5am and not come home until after 7:30 every Monday through Friday got to me. She shaped me into who I am today. I get up at 4am to coach crossfit classes and run my business stuff while I’m watching my daughter, then I have personal training clients throughout the day and I don’t get home until 8pm. I do it because my why, my family, my motive is strong. I can’t give up because my mom is still working, her hands hurt from doing hair all these years. I won’t give up, I have to keep moving, I’ve got to GO GET IT!
